Core aeration is a type of lawn aeration where a machine—known as an aerator—with hollow tines mechanically removes plugs/cores of soil and thatch from a lawn. Core aeration creates a channel that allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Aeration also breaks up compacted soil, allowing water and fertilizer to permeate into the root zone.

Thatch is a layer of living and dead grass shoots, stems, and roots that forms between the green grass blades and the soil surface. A small layer of thatch (1/2 inch or less) is actually beneficial; it insulates against temperature extremes, helps keep moisture in the soil, and provides a protective layer of cushioning.

When the thatch layer becomes too thick (more than 1/2 inch), it can reduce the amount of oxygen and moisture that are able to reach the soil and root system, lead to an increase in pest and disease problems, and also reduce the effectiveness of some fungicides and insecticides, When this happens, it’s time to dethatch your lawn. Dethatching removes this thick layer of decaying plant material; allowing air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer to better reach the soil, and your lawn to drain more effectively.
